    Description

Phase Linear 400 Stereo Amplifier Restored, Upgraded, DC Protected - Plus Extras.
If you like VU meters - here they are!
A great example of the legendary classic Phase Linear 400 stereo power amplifier. I have extensively upgraded and refurbished this unit and it is in perfect working order. Details below.
Cosmetically in good shape with some marks and flaws commensurate with its age. Please look at all the photos for the best description of these. The faceplate bolts are not perfectly shiny anymore; and one of them has a slightly different finish than the others, almost as if someone sanded it smooth at some point. It's certainly not perfect but it presents very well overall.
    Work Performed:
Stock PL400's have a wicked reputation mostly because they lacked effective protection circuitry. Hence the derogatory "FLAME LINEAR" epithet that still gets thrown around.
To fix that, I've installed a Watts Abundant DC protection circuit. This not only protects your speakers if the outputs blow, it also eliminates the "thump" on startup and shutdown with its time-delayed relay.
Every electrolytic capacitor has been replaced: the driver board has high temp Nichicon UKL and UPW units; main filter capacitors upgraded from 5600 uF / 85v to 15,000 uF / 100v.
New speaker binding posts and input jacks - exact replacements of the originals.
This unit is using all original, factory-matched PL909 outputs with new Bergquist silpads underneath.
Bias is holding steady at the factory specification. DC Offset is steady at 30 mV.
All eight meter bulbs were replaced with correct incandescents. These units can be easily upgraded with LED's but I don't prefer them - I'd rather keep the vintage look.
I've been listening to this unit for two weeks now - nothing is out of place, sonically or otherwise. It functions perfectly and sounds Amazing.
    In summary:
I've modernized this unit, rendering it safe to use on all your favorite speakers, while preserving the classic look. Everything works as it should. It would be a great candidate for further upgrades from White Oak Audio; but if you keep it as-is you have a world-class vintage piece that cannot fail to impress.
    Also included
are the original Owner's Manual, Warranty Card, and a groovy advertisement from the shop where this unit was purchased. I got this amp from its original owner who bought it in Saginaw MI in 1975.
Shipping via FedEx Ground - I have put a lot of love and care into the restoration of this amazing amplifier, and I will be sure to put more of the same love and care into packing and shipping it.
