Grundig NF-2 EL-84 6BQ5 stereo amp.
There are a number of console and musical equipment amps that make great high fidelity amps – but the Grundig NF-2 and NF-22 are at the top of the list. Unfortunately they came from the factory with potentially hazardous AC connections and arcane connection points for input and output. This amp is 100% stock and original – except has had a few updates for safety and ease of use. The list of updates/changes:
Under-chassis mounted AC line fuse
Panel mounted IEC AC jack
On/Off switch
Pilot light (a pet peeve of mine is not knowing whether an amp is powered on or not)
RCA input jacks in parallel with original DIN jack
High quality speaker connectors
Vented bottom panel with rubber feet
Standoffs removed from power transformer for uniform height between transformers
The original VALVO EL-84’s work fine and so were retained. Their performance hints that this amp, like many found in consoles, probably had limited use. I hijacked the equally strong VALVO 12AX7 because they were overkill in this application. In their place is a pair of vintage Euro 12AX7 made at one of the Philips factories.
I declined to update or modify the original circuit for a few reasons - but primarily because I don’t like fixing amps that aren’t broken in the first place. Replacement parts are also an editorial exercise in an argument that I decline to join. The bottom line is that it works and sounds great and will continue to do so until something breaks. At that point, a decision can be made about replacement parts.
