It is considered that the dance could have originated in the Toltec culture.
Currently it is performed in its original context (patron saint festivals of the communities)
by the members of the Nahua and Totonaco indigenous groups and, outside its context,
by Mexican folk dance groups. In pre-Hispanic times it was dedicated to the sun, a trait that is reminiscent of
the crown worn by dancers on the head. It was part of a whole ritual that also
included flying dances. Regarding the origin of its name, there are two theories: the first affirms
that it derives from the fact that, in the past, the crowns of dancers were made
with feathers of the quetzal bird, currently in danger of extinction.
