Description
Bogen DB10-1 HiFi Amplifier, beautifully restored and repaired, is a historic 1950 design in the era of engineers Sidney Harmon and Bernard Karmon before they left
David
Bogen and started the famed Harmon Kardon Company. Their push for exceptional HiFi equipment certainly shows in this wonderful example. The integrated amplifier features the signature Bogen Forest Green Chassis with wonderful Copper colored “DB” initialed original Knobs. It looks as spectacular now as it did 70+ years ago. It is ready for the next 70 years.
This example of the Bogen DB10-1 is untouched and all original except for the repair work to make it fully functional. Please see the photos to judge the quality of the exceptional finish. An experienced engineer repaired this unit and replaced all the wax tone and coupling capacitors with high quality metalized tubular HV caps and all the electrolytic capacitors with all new electrolytic tubular high temperature units. The metal can capacitor was replaced with a newly manufactured CE Mfg. multi-section Twist-Loc. can. And a defective power resistor was replaced along with any out-of-tolerance parts that may affect performance. For safety, the line cord was replaced with a 3 wire grounded cord and an internal fuse was added to the chassis.
A classic push-pull double 6V6GT output drives Bogen’s quality output transformer for 4, 8 or 16 ohm speaker. The switched input allows Tuner, Aux, and both high and low impedance phono cartridges and the pre-amp also features a monitor output. An unusual capacitive and inductive band pass filter, surely the influence of Kardon, enhances the tone circuit. The vacuum tube line up includes a GE (USA) 6SC7 pre-amplifier, RCA (USA) 6SF5 1st A.F amplifier, GE (USA) 6SL7GT 2nd amp and phase inverter, a pair of GE (USA) 6V6GT output amplifiers, and finally a RCA (USA) 5Y3GT rectifier. A pilot lamp graces the beautiful graphics on the front panel and adds to the warm glow of the tube filaments.
Connected to a good speaker, the sound is warm and satisfying, in my opinion, just as I imagine Sidney and Bernard would want it. There is no perceptible hum that I can hear and the gain is strong and volume is more than adequate for its size. Treasure the authenticity of this and please don’t consider modifying for any other purpose but pure HiFi.
Review the photos carefully as this is the actual unit that you will receive. I will carefully pack the unit so you should receive this amplifier intact via Fedex ground.
PLEASE NOTE:
The Can Capacitor nearest the power transformer was electrically replaced by separate capacitors under the chassis, but it was physically left in place to maintain the original appearance of the amplifier.
There are high voltages if you remove the bottom chassis panel, so only knowledgeable technicians should service this device.
This amplifier is fully working at this time, however, considering most components are 70+ years old, once it leaves my possession, I cannot guarantee it and cannot accept returns.
